HIGHLIGHTS
While favorable food security conditions persist across most of the region, localized acute food insecurity is being experienced in southern Malawi, the semi-arid districts of southern and central Mozambique, the southern and western provinces of Zimbabwe, south-east Madagascar, most parts of Lesotho and some parts of Angola.
In Malawi, it is estimated that 1.63 million people are food insecure, and will require support for 3 to 8 months.
In Lesotho, maize production fell by 77 per cent compared to last season.
In Angola, an estimated 366,780 households (1,833,900 people) are expected to be affected by drought, and an estimated 533,000 children under age 5 could be affected by various levels of malnutrition.
In Zimbabwe, the national cereal production estimate is 33 per cent less than the 2010/11 season harvest and 15 per cent below the 2006-2011 average.
In Madagascar, 84,000 households are experiencing severe food insecurity.
In Mozambique, from July-September 2012, isolated cases of Stressed (IPC Phase 2) food security conditions may expand into other areas negatively affected by drought earlier this year.
